Polar Bears International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the worldwide conservation of the polar bear and its habitat through research and education. We provide scientific resources and information on polar bears and their habitat to all interested parties.

Our primary goals are to:
  • Conserve the world's polar bears and their habitat through research and education
  • Serve as a central educational resource on polar bears worldwide
  • Sponsor scientific research that will help the world's polar bears
  • Promote teamwork and encourage constructive dialogue
  • Build an organization that is international in scope.

Our fiscal policy
PBI strongly believes that all the donations we receive should directly help the bears. Therefore, all officers and directors serve without pay or expense reimbursement in order to ensure the lowest possible administrative costs. Our office space is donated as well.

This frugal approach, coupled with profits from our Polar Bear Gift Shop, allows PBI to dedicate the majority of all donations to key polar bear projects.

Who we are
PBI was founded in 1992 by wildlife photographer Dan Guravich, a Canadian native who was internationally known for his work with polar bears. Dan served as PBI's first president. He resigned in 1995 for health reasons, but remained active as chairman of the board until his death in 1997. Today, the members of our board of directors and advisory council are scattered across the U.S. and Canada.
